William J. "Bill" Fanning

          William J. "Bill" Fanning, 87, of Fowler, IL., passed away at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
     Bill was born October 7, 1935, in Hannibal, MO., the only child of Floyd and Allene Starrett Fanning. He lived his young life in Hannibal and Center, MO., and graduated Center High School in 1953. Bill married Mary Kathryn Hohner on December 16, 1956, at Fifth Street Baptist Church in Hannibal. She survives.
    He served his country with the U.S. Navy where he received his Interior Communications training which aided him in his work with several companies which included Clevenger Electric in Camp Point, IL., and Norfolk Southern Railroad. After retiring from the RR, he worked for Marlboro Wire, Quincy Transit, and also drove cars for several Quincy dealers. Bill may best be remember for his "story telling", whether he was MCing a bluegrass festival, an impromptu function, auctioneering, or sitting having coffee at the local diner. He could always come up with a great story. Bill also enjoyed playing Rook and Scrabble, horseshoes, garage sales, and finding a chance to buy, sell, or trade. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished time he spent with his family.
     Bill was a faithful member of Faith Baptist Church in Camp Point, IL., where he had served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and numerous committees. He was also a member of Gideons International.
     Survivors in addition to his wife, Kathy, are his children, Brad Fanning, of Fowler, Steve Fanning, of Golden, and Cheryl (Steve) Bohn of Washington, IA.; his grandchildren, Adam Fanning (Matt), Tyler (Erin) Fanning, Levi Fanning, Michelle (Corey) Large, Bryan Fanning, Erica (Erik) Nilius, and Alyssa (Nick) Weidemeier; his great grandchildren, Madilyn and Amaeya Large, Bria, Bodie, and Bexley Nilius, and Khalia, Khenley, and Khya Weidemeier; an aunt, Shirley Peters of Beach Park, IL., and a special cousin, Carolyn (Roger) Ratliff of Quincy.
     He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and aunts, and uncles.
     Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church, Camp Point with Pastor Tom Robbins officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2023, at Faith Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Home Cemetery in Fowler.
     Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Baptist Church  and\or Gideon's International.
