Shirley Smith

Shirley Ann Smith, 86, of Augusta, IL passed away peacefully at 7:48 am Saturday May 13, 2023 at her home.

She was born on November 7, 1936 near Huntsville, IL to Kenneth and Wilma Gerdes McDonald.

Shirley attended Washington School and was a graduate of Augusta High School. She was a homemaker, sold Avon products for many years and owned and operated the Sun Shack in Augusta for several years. She enjoyed gardening, holding and attending garage sales, traveling, mushrooming and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Shirley was instrumental in the organizing and planning of the annual Barn Door Open held on the McDonald farm south of Huntsville which always drew quite the crowd! She loved Christmas time and decorating for that season of the year.

She is survived by 2 sons; Kent (Sheryl) Smith of Mapleton, IL, Roger (Debbie) Smith of Glenarm, IL, 5 grandchildren, Quinten (Beth) Smith, Klent (Mallory) Smith, Shane (Katrina) Smith, Carley (Brandon) Hager, Casey (Nicole) Jones and 5 great-grandchildren, her longtime companion, Kenny Roberts of Augusta, IL and 2 sisters, Mary Ippensen and Janet Ludwig both of Augusta, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Barb Woods.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday May 19, 2023 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Augusta, IL with Pastor Sheri Renner officiating. A visitation with family will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta, IL. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Augusta Lions Club to be used for Augusta Children’s Park Projects or the Augusta Veteran’s Memorial. Following the graveside service a time of food and celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at the Stagger Inn in Augusta, IL.
