Penny Akers

Penny Lynn Akers, 60, of West Point, IL, passed away peacefully at 6:59 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026, at her home in West Point.

She was born on March 29, 1966, in Carthage, IL, to Robert and Jessie Smith Sparrow. She was united in marriage to Larry Akers on August 29, 2012, in Carthage, IL. He survives.

Penny was a graduate of Southeastern High School in Augusta, IL, and attended Vatterott College in Quincy. She had been employed at Methode Electronics in Golden, IL, and later worked at Lowe’s Building Center in Quincy, IL. Penny enjoyed crafting, cooking for her family and friends, doing crossword puzzles, camping, tending and raising flowers, but her most cherished times were those spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; by 2 daughters, Robin (Cody) Pieper of Wever, IA, and Stacey Thurman (Jayson Barnes) of Wayland, MO; a son, Rusty Thurman of West Point, IL; 16 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 2 sisters and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by 2 sons, Wesley Thurman and Jason Reidner, and 4 brothers.

Cremation has been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta, IL is handling arrangements.
