Mildred L. "Millie" Bastert

November 24, 1934 — November 6, 2023

Mildred (Millie) Bastert, of Camp Point, passed away on  November 6, 2023 peacefully in the home of her daughter Wanda Bastert in Louisville, Kentucky.

Millie had a zest for life, retaining her sense of humor and a positive attitude despite declining health issues the last couple of years. Born in Girard, PA to Gladys (Mosher) Caughlin and Roy Caughlin, Millie was one of 6 children. In her early 20’s, her adventurous spirit led her to Miami, Florida where she worked as a secretary for banker, Ray Basten. Ray would introduce Millie to his brother Frank Bastert, a dairy farmer in Camp Point, Illinois. Frank and Millie were married on June 18 1960 in Camp Point where they would raise 4 children on the farm - the oldest son Roger, twins Wanda and Wendy, and the youngest son Randy. Millie was a caretaker of aging relatives all of her adult life, starting with Frank’s mom and dad, her own Mother Gladys Caughlin who lived with them on the farm in her later years, Frankie as he suffered from Kidney Disease in his last few years, and finally her brother-in-law Albert.

Upon Frank’s passing in June 2003, Millie continued farming with son Randy for the next 16 years, while enjoying golf outings with her friends at Arrowhead Golf Course in Camp Point, flower gardening on the farm and making pies. She was a devoted member of Assembly of God Church in Camp Point, and regularly volunteered at Timberpoint Nursing Home in Camp Point.

Retiring from farming in 2019, Millie lived briefly at Curtis Creek Retirement Center in Quincy, IL before moving to Louisville, Kentucky in January 2020 to be with her daughters Wanda and Wendy. There, her hobbies included bird watching, crocheting, putting together picture puzzles and making snuffle mats for her daughter Wendy’s dog training clients. An avid dog lover, she was devoted to many dogs throughout her life, the current one a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Lacey.

Surviving are her son Roger Bastert of LaBelle, MO, daughter Wanda Bastert of Louisville, Kentucky, daughter Wendy Taylor of Prospect, Kentucky, son Randy Bastert of Camp Point, IL, grandchildren John Chilsted (Ryley) of Quincy, IL, Karena Dreyer (Lance) of Quincy, IL, Aaron Carr of Versailles, IL and 7 great grandchildren.

She would have been 89 years old on November 24.
