Michael Pontius

Michael Pontius, 70, of Quincy, IL, passed away at 5:38 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Countryside Care Center in Macomb, IL.

Born January 9, 1956, in Keokuk, IA, Michael was the son of Donald Gene and Marianna Jean Glover Pontius.

Michael grew up in Keokuk, IA, and moved to Mt. Sterling, IL in 1968. For many years, he worked at the nursing home in Mt. Sterling, alongside his parents, who were the administrators, and his younger brother, who was a resident. He lived in Quincy for the majority of his adult life, working various jobs within the construction industry.

Michael was an advocate for safe and livable rental housing and spoke before the City Council several times. He attended the City's Tenant Housing Workshops and was a member of the planning committee for the Tenant Workshop held at Blessed Sacrament Church in 2023.

In his free time, Michael enjoyed cooking, listening to music, playing piano, and attending community events. He often attended Quincy Community Theater productions and Quincy Symphony concerts. He was a member of the Gem City Lodge #357 Odd Fellows club and could often be seen riding around downtown on his motorized scooter.

Survivors include his aunts, Wanda Lyons of San Marcos, TX, and Shirley Glover of Mt. Pleasant, IA, in addition to many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Joey Pontius.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 15, at Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials may be made to the Quincy Symphony Orchestra Association.
