A beloved father, grandfather, husband, and storyteller, Lyle J. Campbell, 95, of Camp Point, IL, died peacefully at 7:35 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2026, with family by his side.
Born January 16, 1931, in Pike County, IL, Lyle was the son of Edward W. and Delma I. (Martin) Campbell and was later raised in the loving home of his grandparents, William H. and Emily F. Martin. What started as a chance meeting at the Grill Cafe in Camp Point resulted in a wedding on April 12, 1953, and a 59-year marriage to Erma Tournear. Erma passed away in 2012, and since then, Lyle often shared with family how much he missed her.
Mr. Campbell was always a hard worker, often working multiple jobs at a time. Among his jobs, Lyle worked for Gardner Denver, the Village of Camp Point, Lee Fertilizer, Crop Production, and Blessing Hospital. Lyle also drove many miles as a truck driver, preferably in an International semi-tractor.
He was a member of the Camp Point United Methodist Church. Lyle continued to live independently after the passing of his wife, Erma. Lyle's home became the gathering spot for the family on holidays.
Survivors include a son, Jeff Campbell (Frances) of Coatsburg, IL; a daughter, Debbie Freeman of Camp Point; nine grandchildren: Janiece Campbell, Craig Freeman (Kc), Nik Freeman (Jessica), Janelle Edwards (Jason), Jennifer Gronewold (Lance), Jeffrey Kyle Campbell (Michelle), Bridget Arnold (Shane), Billy Joe Campbell (Chris Holder), and Brock Johnson (Neal Huffman); twenty-one great-grandchildren: Blaine Neiswinder (Kyra), Brittany McAllister (Kyle), Sidney, Nicole, and Courtney DeVerger; Kenton, Kody, Kameron, and Konnor Gronewold; Kasey, Micheal, Jordan and Kevin Campbell; Elizabeth, Eve, Nadia, Brayden, and Landrey Freeman; and Quintin, Brantlee, and Brynlee Arnold; and five great-great-grandchildren: Keynu and Kova Neiswinder, Fowler and Anna Lynn Gronewold, and Roman Green.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma; a son, Kevin Campbell; a daughter, Teresa Johnson; two sons-in-law, Bill Freeman and Dana Johnson; his parents; and a sister, Ramona Jean Goodwin.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Camp Point United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Sheri Renner. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point.
