Gary L. Clampitt (81) of Augusta Illinois, passed away in his home on March 28, 2023. Gary was born in his parent‘s home near Bowen, IL on February 10, 1942 the third child of J. Carroll and Waunetta Jud Clampitt. He lived his whole life in Hancock County Illinois. Gary attended a one-room country school for one year located on the southeast corner of the farm which he now owns and lived. He then attended school in Augusta, Illinois, continuing his education at Western Illinois University for two years. He married Donna Chockley in Augusta, Illinois on August 16, 1962, she survives.
Gary started farming in 1964 on the last farm owned by Carthage College in Hancock County. In the early 80’s he also became a crop hail adjustor and later was one of the co-founders of AgriServe selling hail and multi-peril crop insurance throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri Gary’s territory was all of northern Illinois where he met many small town agents. In 1993, he sold his stock in the company and farmed full time where he could enjoy one of the loves of his life, snowmobiling. He knew every road and path in this area and also northern Wisconsin. He was able to take one trip to Yellowstone National Park to snowmobile with his son and friends.
He is survived by three children Becky(Troy) Kemp of Chatham, IL, Dr. Vicky Eidson of Quincy IL , and Greg (Jayne) Clampitt of Port Byron, IL. Ten grandchildren who he adored, Traci (Josh) Smith of Plainville, IL, Annette (Ethan) Siebers of Burlington, IA, Kira Eidson of Washington, DC, Cassie (Logan) Pratt of St. Louis, MO, Jamie (Amanda Keaty) Kemp of Charleston, IL, Devin Kemp of Berlin Germany, Brock (Afton) Kemp of Madison WI, Garrett Clampitt of Berkley, MI, Dr. Jeannett Clampitt (fiance Austin Schuiteman) of Ames, IA, and Jannell Clampitt of Auburn, AL. Great-Grandchildren, Wyatt, Wesson and Kahlan Smith, Jack and Adalynn Kemp and Atticus Kemp.
He is also survived by one sister Donna Simmons of Bowen, IL and Roger (Joyce) Clampitt of Newark IL and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law, Herb and Eva Chockley, brothers-in-law George Simmons and Dick Ringenburg and one neice Robin Nardi.
Gary is a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Augusta. He was also a proud lifelong Democrat, having held the position of precinct committee person in the 60’s.
Visitation will be held at Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta from 4 to 7 pm on Friday March 31, 2023. Celebration of life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church on Saturday April 1, 2023 at 10:00 am with Pastor Rick Hertenstein officiating. Cremation has been accorded and his ashes spread at a later date on his farm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Chaddock School in Quincy IL, Type 1 Diabetes Research, and The Faith Lutheran Church in Augusta IL.
