Eugene T “Gene” O'Leary

Eugene T. (“Gene”) O’Leary of Camp Point died July 3, 2026, at his home.

He loved to tell jokes and stories, and people were amazed at his ability to remember so many jokes and stories about many topics.

He was born on July 22, 1944, in Chicago to Eugene T. and Loretta (Reusz) O’Leary, Sr., who preceded him in death. After graduating from De La Salle High School, he proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1966 and was stationed in Korea.

He attended Western Illinois University, where he met Janet Rhea, and they were married in an ecumenical ceremony at the Camp Point Methodist Church on August 21, 1971. They were looking forward to celebrating their 55th anniversary this year.

Gene enjoyed a long career working with electronics and in management at Adams Telephone Co-op. After retiring, he spent over 20 years volunteering with the MEN at Blessing Hospital. He also pursued his hobbies of fishing and woodworking. While he enjoyed fishing at his pond and with friends, he also enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren and taking them on rides around their property. He used wood from trees on his property to make numerous card boxes for special occasions, and he also made dollhouses and barn quilts.

Gene was an active member of the Camp Point United Methodist Church and served as lay leader, board member, and member of the choir. He was also a member of VFW Post 5410. A highlight was being able to go on the Honor Flight with Ryan, who is also a veteran. He was a big supporter of his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their sporting events, concerts, and birthday celebrations. Yearly family vacations were a highlight for Gene and Janet.

Gene was sometimes known as “Clancy,” and he loved to tell jokes and stories. People were amazed at his ability to remember so many jokes and stories about many topics.

His grandchildren all have special memories of his humorous expressions. Unfortunately, his disease took away most of his ability to speak, which was especially difficult for him. However, he seldom complained despite his numerous treatments, medications, and hospital stays. His family appreciates the care and support given to them during his illness.

Survivors include his wife, Janet, and children Jennifer (Casey) Rexroat of Monmouth, IL, and Ryan (Cassie) O’Leary of Bellevue, NE. In addition, he is survived by his beloved grandchildren Delaney, McKinley, and Rogan Rexroat, and Madison and Carter O’Leary. His brother Jim (Terry) O’Leary of Chicago and brothers-in-law Vic (Judy) Rhea, Bob (Debbie) Rhea, and Mark (Esther) Rhea also survive. He loved being Uncle Gene to several special nieces and nephews and also Grandpa to several “bonus” grandchildren. Many friends have been blessed with his wit, wisdom, and special stories.

Visitation for Gene will be held on Tuesday, July 7, from 4:00 to 7:00, and the funeral will be on Wednesday, July 8, at 10:30, all at the Camp Point United Methodist Church. Pastor Sheri Renner will officiate.

Donations to honor Gene may be made to the Camp Point United Methodist Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
