Don Stabler

March 14, 1939 — December 5, 2025

Donald W. Stabler, 86, of Camp Point, IL, passed away peacefully at 12:15 a.m. on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Timberpoint Healthcare Center in Camp Point.

Don was born on March 14, 1939, in Quincy, IL, the son of Harold and Anna Mabel Gay Stabler. He graduated from Central High School in Camp Point, IL, in 1957. Don was first married to Joyce Means and later married Jane Click on January 31, 1976. He is survived by his wife, Jane; his children, Monty Stabler (Susan) of Mt. Sterling, IL, Susan (Everett) DeMoss of Clayton, IL, Patrick Stabler of Ursa, IL, and Dianna Stabler of Collinsville, IL; his grandchildren, Jennifer Campbell, Josh (Madison) Stabler, Heather (Eli) Volk, Johnathan (Leanne) DeMoss, Chad DeMoss, Brenna (Daniel) Goodman, Alainna Butler, Marinna Butler, Reyanna Butler, Beckam Butler, and Aristina Stabler; five great-grandchildren and one more on the way; his sister-in-law, Sandra Stabler; and his nieces and nephew, Debra (Robert) Bramblett, Kim Stabler, and Tim (Tracy) Stabler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Stabler; his sisters, Joyce Cheney and Anne James; and his brother, Gene Gay "Reek" Stabler.

Don graduated from high school in 1957 and began his career at Ben Clevenger’s service station in Camp Point. He later worked as an over-the-road truck driver for Glenn DeWitt, Gaines Trucking, and Gully Transportation before retiring from Sharkey Transportation. While trucking provided for his family, it also meant long hours away from home.

Don met Jane, the love of his life, in October 1975. Their whirlwind romance led to a first date in November, a proposal on December 13, and marriage the following January. Don never missed an opportunity to open the door for his wife. Together for nearly 50 years, they were just 57 days shy of celebrating their golden anniversary—a testament to a love that began in an instant and lasted a lifetime. Don will forever be Jane’s sugar.

A faithful member of Faith Baptist Church, Don lived out his faith with a servant’s heart. For decades, he picked up elderly or homebound church members, served as a greeter and usher, hung up coats for the elderly ladies, and operated the elevator. On weekends home from the road, he could be found fixing things around the house or tending to the yard. After retiring, he volunteered at the Community for Christ Assistance Center in Camp Point, IL, where he picked up donated food that greatly aided the community. He was well-known as the neighborhood greeter and local stray cat ambassador. He demonstrated his love through consideration of others in everything he did. It is his legacy, the gift that truly matters, because to be loved is to be considered. And Don did that with his whole heart.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 10, at Faith Baptist Church in Camp Point, with Pastor Tom Robbins officiating.
