John C. "Jack" O'Neal

June 10, 1926 ~ April 1, 2018 (age 91)

John C. “Jack” O’Neal of Augusta, IL died Sunday April 1, 2018 at the Golden Good Shepherd Home in Golden, Illinois.  He was 91.

 Born June 10, 1926, the son of Robert Lee O’Neal and Helen Geddes O’Neal, John was a 1944 graduate of Carthage High School.  He served in the United States Naval Reserve, attended Monmouth College for two years and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois, where he graduated in 1951 with a degree in Mining Engineering.

John began work in June of 1951 with the Explosives Division of American Cyanamid, based in New Castle, Pennsylvania.  There he met and married Kathleen “Kay” Victoria Anderson, on January 19, 1952.

 John returned to Hancock County in 1961, joining the family limestone business, R. L. O’Neal & Sons, and was actively involved in its management until 1992.  An avid reader, John served on the Augusta Public Library Board during the formation of the Great River Library System.  John was also a longtime proponent for the provision of communication services through member owned cooperatives.  He served on the Board of Directors of the Adams Telephone Cooperative from the late 1960s to the early 1980s and on the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association Board during the 1970s.

Kay preceded John in death on November 5, 2000.  John and L. Jean Denny Hornecker were married on July 21, 2001 in Augusta, where they made their home until Jean’s death on March 11, 2018.

 John is survived by his children and the blended families of he and Jean that were an important part of their lives together.  Jack (Diane) O’Neal of Plymouth, IL, Tom (Marcia) O’Neal of Peoria, IL, Philip O’Neal of Quincy, IL, Steven (Patricia) Denny of Naperville, IL, Richard (Ginger) Denny of Augusta, IL, Michael (Lisa) Denny of Chandler, AZ, Phyllis (Charles) Darnell of Quincy, IL, Mick (Janet) Hornecker of Belton, TX, Christopher (Debbie) Hornecker of Augusta, IL, Dawn (Spencer) Trautvetter of Loraine, IL, Timothea (Keith) Wasson of Quincy, IL, as well as 66 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

 John was a golfer, amateur historian, and was blessed with uncanny recall.He’ll always be remembered for looking for the last lost golf ball, discussing the events of the day and telling you about facts you never knew you needed to know.  He’ll be missed by all who knew him.

 Visitation will be Wednesday April 4, 2018 from 5 to 7pm and funeral services Thursday April 5 at 2pm, both at Hamilton Funeral Home in Augusta, Illinois. Burial with Military Honors will be at Harmony cemetery near Bentley, IL.  Memorials may be made to the Golden Good Shepherd Home in Golden, Illinois and the Tri County Golf Course in Augusta, Illinois.
